Bhubaneswar, the capital of Orissa (Bhuban being World and Iswar being God) is known as the temple city of India, because of its innumerable ancient temples of typical Orissan architecture. Bhubaneswar is the seat of Tribhubaneswar or Lord Lingaraj. Out of 7000 temples, (600 temples still exist) with their soaring pinnacles adorn the skyline of the city and the temples are to this ancient city as the forts are to Rajasthan. It is probably the only city in the world that enables an authentic over-view of the stages of development of Hindu temples architecture. It is the place where temple building activities of Orissan style flowered from its very inception to its fullest culmination extending over a period of one thousand years. The modern buildings reflecting refinement of taste along with the architectural splendours of age old magnificent temples bring a distinction to Bhubaneswar as a place where the past has mingled in rightful proportions with the present.Over the span of time bhubaneswar has been known as Kalinga nagar, Tribhubaneswar, Ekamra Kshetra, Mandiramalini.Kharavela from Chedi Dynesty ruled in 1 century B.C. whose imperishable record of administration can be seen in Khandagiri and Dhauligiri.After 1st century B.C. bhubaneswar remained under the influence of external powers as the Guptas, mauryas and Kushans From the 6TH century A.D. to  1568 A.D. , Bhubaneswar was ruled by Silodbhavas 575 to 700 A.D., bhoumakaras 736 to 940 A.D., Somavansis 885-1100 A.D., and the Chalukyas 1559-1568 A.D..after Mukunda Deva from Surya Dynasty the last Hindu emperor of Orissa mughals and the British ruled the state
